“He did the same with the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant written in my blood, blood poured out for you.” Luke 22,20 (MSG) |
A covenant is a solemn promise, a binding vow made between two or more parties.
The root word for 'covenant' in Hebrew language means “to cut” or “to bind”.
A covenant is also a compact. Compact meaning closely put together, joined.
From these definitions, one good example of a covenant is marriage.
And it’s interesting that, marriage is often referred to when it comes to the relationship between God and His people; Christ and the church.
When the Israelites would forsake God and go after idols, God would say that they are being unfaithful and adulterous. “Long ago I broke the yoke that oppressed you and tore away the chains of your slavery, but still you said, ‘I will not serve you.’ On every hill and under every green tree, you have prostituted yourselves by bowing down to idols.” Jeremiah 2,20 (NLT) “..you have played the harlot with many lovers..” (Jeremiah 3,1NKJV)
"and [I know that] you [who believe] are enduring patiently and are bearing up for My name’s sake, and that you have not grown weary [of being faithful to the truth]. But I have this [charge] against you, that you have left your first love [you have lost the depth of love that you first had for Me]." Revelation 2,3-4 (AMP) |
The subject of 'covenant' is a deep one. Today’s emphasis is to show how God relates with us on a covenant basis. We see God making covenants with different people: Noah, Abraham, David, the nation of Israel, etc.
If you've given your life to Jesus, you are in covenant with God through Jesus Christ. Salvation is a covenant.
This means that God is committed to you! God is not passive with his children, He is fully engaged.
In fact, sometimes it can look like God wants more of us than we want more of Him. He desires that we give Him our hearts, our love and affection. And not only is He committed to His own, He is committed to His Word.
God is faithful. God is a covenant keeping God. He will always do His part no matter what.
And to Him, His relationship with His own is no shallow business.
“But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.” 1 Corinthians 6,17 (NKJV) |
